Howell Mountain Challenge 2011

Out to sharpen the edge, prime the engine for next week's Tahoe Sierra 100.

Thought I would try something a little different; I'd go out hard and fast on the assumption that so much of the finish is determined by start order out of the gate at these 'short' XC races. All Cat I 19 -34 (group #3) and 35- 44 (group #4) racers would go off in the second wave, two minutes behind the Pros.

The intense interval work on the steepest part of Oak Manor Drive paid off.…

Humbolt 12 2011

I had a plan.

The game would play out in manageable chunks. Twelve hours of racing is too much to think about at once. I had studied the course map, calculated my needed carlorie intake, laid out my primary fuels, pre-filled the water bottles and set up my solo pit station.

The course ran through the redwoods across sweet flowing single track descents and up mellow fire road climbs. I figured a moderate 9 mile/hour pace around the 7.4 mile course would allow me to knock off 14…

Death Ride 2011

Nice to come home in 'Peace'.
The delictible calm and deep satisfaction of surviving a day at risk leads to the best kind of tranquility.
Death Ride Report:
Never ridden with 3,500 people before. Damn strange kinda happening with riders heading out on the course as early as 3:30 AM.

Slept poorly by the roadside. Sleeping bag soaking wet from heavy dew. Awoke at 4 AM. Brewed coffee on the whisper light. Bright ball of flame priming…

Annadel 2011

It had been nearly 30 years since the original Grasshopper had been held at Annadel State Park. It took years of perseverance by Carlos and other dedicated Bike Monkeys to get this event off the ground once again. This time it was for a cause.  The money made by the race this day was to be given to the State Park to thwart off the threat that it might be closed due to the State's Budget Crisis.

An entire city block of downtown Santa Rosa was shut down to accommodate the 600+…

Terrible Two

That one hurt.

Spent most of the week leading up to this ride fighting and losing to a chest cold. Upper respiratory congestion was not doing wonders for my aerobic capacity.
Coming into this event, which is part of my Sierra Tahoe Training plan, I felt fit and fast, where just last weekend, I pulled off a ninth place at the King Ridge Grasshopper series final. About 90 miles of serious hurt for that one, but was still able to finish strong, knocking off…

Super Sweetwater 2011

Levi pulled the group at a gentlemen's pace up the lower flat section of Bohemian Highway from Monte Rio. As the grade increased, so did the pace and intensity as we pulled a left in Occidental onto Graton Rd. Down the first descent, the pack began spreading out as the lead group hammered down toward Laguna Rd.

In our group of 15 or so riders, Brian kept it rolling on the only 26 bike in the peloton. Friendly Mig kept the chatter up and the chase group together, as we each pulled a…

Sea Otter 2011

This has not been my race. Last year at Sea Otter, I had just crested the first climb when my pedal fell apart. I coasted down, throwing the towel in a my top ten attempt. Bum deal.

This year, feeling strong and mostly recovered from last weekend's NVDC crash, I felt confident of pulling off a top ten, and quite possibly even a top five finish. No luck.

Around the track and onto to the dirt, I hung on to the back of the lead riders in my group. Past the first climb and down…

Napa Valley Dirt Classic Damage Assessment

The day started out well enough; riders congratulating me on last weekend's Boggs finish, perfect weather, relaxed warm-up, front row line up.  Stayed with the top ten on the run-up off the gun.  Moved up a few positions on flats past the airport. Rode smooth through the looping single track, relishing the smooth ride of my Superfly 100. Easy drop and climb into and out of the big rock-strewn rollers.

All going well. Feeling strong, moving up a few more places. Then, on one of the…

Boggs VI

Last year I'd never even tried an eight hour race. For Boggs V, I gave it my best, not knowing exactly what to expect; I stayed relaxed and calm, attempting to tap the cumulative benefit of a winter's base training.

Somewhat to my surprise, I had finished with the best time and with the most laps among all the experts on that cold and muddy 10 mile course. Only 12 minutes behind Kevin Smallman, I would have been second in Pro and third overall (some single speed dude inched passed me…

COOL 2011 Wake-Up Call

It seemed that I got up on the wrong side of the bed. The daylight savings time change the night before, meant one hour less sleep. Despite not having ridden or done much the day before, I slogged through breakfast, not feeling entirely rested. Thankfully, Shiloh drove in the dark, while I tried to snooze, waiting for light and a clear mind.

As is often the case, I dreaded the start. Lining up in the second row, I searched for inspiration, attempting to simultaneously stay relaxed and…

Knickerbocker 8

That's it.

I'm good for now.

Battled it out with the local pros for eight 10 mile laps. 1,200' of short climbs and fast descents per lap. Dusty course. Temps in the low 80s.

The first four laps were fast, forcing me ride past my LT or get dropped. Re-fueled, hydrated and lubed the creaky chain on each lap. Gagged down hand fulls of endurolytes.

Race mind: Relax. Stay focused. Spin. Count…

Locust IV

Fourth ride in the Locust series. My first, took third. Team Summit cleaned house with 1st,2nd,3rd & 4th place positions back into the Gestalt Haus. Jim lead, followed shortly behind by Gabe, myself and Shiloh. All of us only a few minutes apart.

Early on the climb up Loma, team green, orange and black pulled away from the rest of the field. The first aid station was barely prepared for the Summit train barreling through. With the gap established, we could ease…

Sierra-Tahoe 100

One last push. Just past the final hike-a-bike section, one mile from the finish, where I had earlier in the day dodged my way through a mess of downed riders, my rear derailleur suddenly seized up and I abruptly skidded to a stop. Moments before, I had concluded that 4th or 5th place was in the bag, ‘unless something catastrophic happens’.…

SoNoMas 100

Mixed it up with the Pro class this time. All Expert riders were expected to share this opportunity. Rumor had it that a hand full of Tour riders were among the starters. Levi I could recognize. The rest looked unfamiliar, but formidable. Unlike the blazing heat of last year that contributed to the whole racing falling apart, the sky was overcast and the temperature cool this time. Counter-clockwise around Lake Sonoma, the 35 mile course promised to be relentless; steep climbs, followed by… Continue

Howell Mountain Blues

Came up to this race expecting a wake up call to refresh the feeling of suffering intensity. After Downieville, I'd spent the last month putting in miles and elevation gain in training for the longer ultra races later in the season such as Kirkwood 9-5, Sierra Tahoe 100 and Knickerbocker. I had included short intense interval sessions a couple of times a week, but was not entirely prepared for the three fast laps of Howell that require knife edge concentration and sustained hyper focus to stay… Continue

Up at Downieville

Stay upright. Rubber-side down. Clean ride. Have fun. Seemed simply enough.

This year I put aside the hard-tail and lightweight gear. After flatting last year and then losing brake pressure on the descent, I wanted full confidence in my ride this round. On to my new Supefly 100, I mounted WTB Wolverines to the heavy stock Bontrager wheels, borrowed my buddy's gravity drop and set out for a clean ride. This time I was not going to get jackhammered off the saddle and… Continue

Trail & Error at Tamarancho

I should have registered earlier. One step behind seemed to be the pattern ahead for me.

Missing the online registration deadline, I petitioned the Race Director Julia for a spot in the race. Jim argued on my behalf that I could be swapped with Arno who was unable to make the race. Julia was kind and let me in!

Warming up, my body felt stiff. I had taken a hard tumble the week before and was still letting the wounds heal and the confidence rebuild. I…

Lemurians Attack!

Two minutes slower than last year. Simple math: 98% effort in = 98% performance out. Felt somewhat tentative on the loose descents, unwilling to charge ahead on the flats. Held back, even though I felt fit. Could have been the couple of weeks of stomach distress or the cumulative effect of multiple back-to-back races. Something had infested my gut and my head to boot. Although, I did Climb strong, passing through the ranks of intermediate course riders. I just let too many riders, get away from… Continue

Sea Otter Blues

My first DNF. Five minutes into the race at the top of the first climb, my egg-beater pedal fell apart, leaving only a dangerously sharp spindle to stand on. Realizing the cage was still attached to my cleat, I slipped the broken assembly back onto the spindle and I dropped into the first single track. That didn't last long, when I lost the cage while pushing through a sharp corner. Another 36 miles like this would have been sketchy. No way around this one.

I rolled out of…
