The Call Up

Northern California Bicycle Racing Community

I smiled early Sunday morning when I awoke to cool fog extending into Lucas Valley. In the past I have succumbed to the heat of Rockhopper. I never withdrew from the race but I suffered significant cramps during the steep climbs toward the end. As I drove toward Vacaville the fog gradually dissipated and I began to feel the heat of summer sunshine.

I looked for a parking spot in the shade and noticed the Trek tent and a large number of ACME riders. I am glad we supported the local race and hopefully it gains momentum after a year off. The volunteers were friendly and enthusiastic. While there were fewer racers, there were more hikers, runners, and horses on the trails than I remember from previous years. Lagoon Valley has become more popular and diversified. People were flying remote controlled stunt planes and I noticed an archery center nearby. I hoped the horse people, archery enthusiasts, and stunt pilots were not offended by the number of mountain bikers, because if they ganged up against us it would be messy.

I entered the open 60+ category which is only two laps. There were only four riders in our group however they appeared to be committed riders. We introduced ourselves and bantered about the heat. While we were just happy to have a bike and a pulse, as soon as the race starts competitive instincts take effect and we feel alive and young again.

I started slow to assess the group and avoid overexertion and potential cramping later. The lead rider took off and I never saw him again. The three of us continued until I felt the need to increase the pace. I passed them and tried to build some separation and look for the lead rider. I had a good first lap and slowed for the second lap as I felt cramps in my quadriceps developing despite adequate hydration and electrolytes. I noticed the third place rider was gaining on me and looking strong as I climbed the final switchbacks. I felt I was a faster descender, so if I could maintain my position at the top, all would be fine.

I pushed the pace at the top and suddenly cramped. I was forced to walk the final switchbacks. I jumped on my bike and began the long descent. I rode hard and fast downhill and gained some distance. Unfortunately I went into one curve too fast and front wheel slipped on the loose trail and I slammed to ground with my shoulder absorbing most of the impact. This morning my shoulder feels fine but my ribs are sore. Nothing bad, just a restless night of sleep trying to find a comfortable position.

Anyway I collected myself, jumped on my bike, and rode more cautiously to the finish. I finished second 9-10 minutes behind the leader. The remainder of the ACME team dominated. I missed my podium while listening to Simon sing Dire Straits 'money for nothing and chicks for free' at the ACME tent. I didn't know they had started the awards ceremony, but who is to say which moment was more priceless.
