Rockhopper Classic XC Single Speed 2018 9/15/18

The weather was perfect for a XC race at Rockville Park. 60-70 *F, sunshine and a little wind, perfect. The course seemed to be the same as the first time I did this race last year. It's a fun and great course for single speed, wish more races were done here.

I was looking forward to comparing my time from last year. I've been riding consistently, but still too much "social riding" and not enough of "quality" riding. I'm also racing a different bike this year, slightly heavier than last year's bike, should be interesting, better fitness, but slightly heavier bike. I can't remember if I ran 32/21 or 22 last year and decided to go with 32/21 with my better fitness.

Rockhopper is a mass start, 4 lap first wave of pro and expert took off, then it was the 3 lap sport, single speed wave's turn. My start was good, I was trying to stay with the lead single speeder. There was only three single speeders at this race, the other two guys were from Frame Up bikes of Walnut Creek. I followed the lead guy until I bobbled a section and had to get off and run up it. This allowed the other single speeder to pass me.

By the end of the first lap, I had passed the second place single speeder and could see the first place guy about 200 yards ahead. I tried to slowly reel him in, but I was slowly fading. By end of second lap, I could not see him. I could feel I faded more on the third and final lap, I didn't see third place single speeder behind me, so I kind of cruised it home.

I'm disappointed with my race endurance, but happy to be going in the right direction.

I'm starting to really like the Rockhopper race. It's low key, a great course, local, fair entry fee, grass roots vibes, and you get home early too.

Tomorrow is the Enduro race, which will be a first for me, should be interesting!

Hope this is on again next year!

Cheers all,

Waily Fung

Low Gap Grass Hopper 2019

After some internet surveying, I felt that the Low Gap course was going to be fast.

Even though it was 43 miles with 5.6k of climbing, I felt there was going to be some really fast times.

I had originally planned on riding it on my XC hard tail, but I was doing some drive train changes and I could not get it done in time. And after surveying the course, my gravel bike seemed like a better choice anyway.

The weather was good, slight clouds, probably about 50*F at the…
