Old Cazadero Grasshopper 2017

How did this day get here so fast? I remember when Jim signed us up and I was like, "oh, ok", thinking how far off that day was and how much time was ahead for me to prepare. Somehow there must've been, I swear to it, a time warp. I blinked and woke up Saturday morning, January 18th, and all of a sudden I was in a car with three other Acme team riders,…

2017 Old Caz Grasshopper: 9th Place

I chose the Grasshopper Adventure Series’ Old Cazadero gravel/road race as my first event of 2017 to gain some high intensity speed and fitness as well as to fatigue my body beyond what I can accomplish in training. Although most of the field rides either a cyclocross bike with wide tires or a rigid mountain bike at Old Caz, I don't own either of those, so I settled on my new Trek Top Fuel 9.8 with a pair of semi-slick Bontrager Tires. It was a similar set up to…

2017 Old Caz' 'Hopper

Despite a very rainy winter, the weather was perfect for my tenth run at the Old Cazadero Grasshopper.

I sold my cyclocross bike a few months ago, so it was back onto my trusty rigid mountain bike.  Honestly, I think it is a pretty fast way to go:  light and fast rolling 2.0 Bontrager XR0 tires (28/26 psi), 36x10-42 drivetrain, and an overall weight under 17 lbs.  I drove up with Cathy, Phil, and Teddy, and we met Greg, Mark and Carson before the start.  This is becoming a unique and…

2017 Old Caz

My second run on this course, this time on a cross bike. With 75-80% of this ride on pavement , a cross bike made this much faster than last year for me and team mate Mark Ingwersen. Thanks to the help from Jim and Shilo of ACME bikes from helping me set up my Boone 5 with bontrager CXO38 tires. The bike handled well down the muddy wet dirt down hill and was fast rolling on the pavement. Like last year, I was lucky to have Mark work with me as we made our way in and out of packs of riders.… Continue

Old Caz Grasshopper 2017

As one of the new members of the Acme Bikes family, it seems appropriate to start this post with a brief introduction. So hi, I'm Phil Mooney. I like riding and racing bikes, and I've been off-and-on serious about riding bikes for more than a decade. I live in San Rafael, and Jimbo is one of my best friends and regular training partners. I'm honored to be associated with the shop!

Having not pinned on a number for a couple years, I was excited to get back into it for the Old Caz…

Annadel XC 2016, 10th Masters 50+

I had made up my mind, I was going to finally race Annadel.  I had pre ridden the course the week before with Carson and came away knowing it was going to be a tough race.  The terrain is much rougher than most places in Marin and the three extended climbs would make or break the race.

Team Acme Bikes was well represented with Stephen Flynn,  Mark Ingwersen, Mark Buell, Greg Alsterlind and myself.  As Greg's and my Master 50+ group staged, Marc Kirberg asked why I wasn't on a…

2016 Annadel XC

I wish I would ride Annadel more often. Not that Marin County trails aren't already fantastic, but variety keeps life exciting, right? Although Santa Rosa is nearby, the trails are quite different. More singletrack, more rocks and less shade is how I see it. I raced here last year and placed well, missing a podium spot by less than a few seconds which was incredibly frustrating! That was the last time I rode here as well so my memory of the course was limited to major events.

Aside…

Annadel XC 16'

Last XC of the year for me. I had Done this race last year with Mark Inwersen and was disappointed with my effort. This is a tricky course with plenty of embedded rocks and dusty single track and day hikers to work your way through. The pro-race started with Levi running into some poor guy out for his morning ride climbing the first hill just ahead of the start. That worked out well for teammate Steven Flynn who went on to win. Mark Buell, Mark Ingwersen and drove up early together to warm up… Continue

2016 Downieville Classic XC

Greg said it would be the toughest race I'd ever done. His predictions for the season had always been correct (kind of spooky, really) and yet I took the news lightly and shrugged it off. I'd planned on borrowing a friends XC race bike but couldn't get comfortable on it so decided to prepare my Pivot Les hard tail for another race. Running a carbon wheel set built by Jim and wrapped in bulbous Maxxis Ardent 2.4 up front and Ikon 2.35 rear rubber, I kept the cast iron dropper post to weigh in…

Downieville 2016

My second time in the Cross Country race. Last year I road my hard tail and it kicked my tail. This year I was better equipped with my Trek Carbon Top Fuel and several pre-rides with Jim and Cathy. I met up early with teammates Mark Ingerwersen and Mark Buell to pre-ride. I was concerned with getting in line late so we cut it short and lined up 25 min. early. Too late! Buell jumped in maybe 100 riders ahead of Mark and I. When they said go we did not move for 45 seconds. At a minute 10 seconds… Continue

CCCX Toro Park 2016

Last minute add to my race log and glad that I did. Another well organized race at a fun location. The course starts on pavement and quickly heads up just over 2 miles on mostly fire roads. A short flat section at the top leads to one one the fastest downhills in all the races I have seen yet. The down hill is not steep or technical but it is mostly hard packed sand with banked corners and long wide open smooth sections. I was on my Trek top fuel but my hard tail super fly would have worked… Continue

2016 XC Nationals Mammoth, CA

Monday morning, July 11, Jim, Simon and I hopped in a car loaded with bikes, gear and lots of excitement, and headed out on our six-hour long journey to Mammoth, CA.  We were on our way to competing in the coveted 2016 XC National Cross country event.  The first racer amongst us to compete was Simon.  He would race on Wednesday.  I raced on Thursday in the Cat 1/2, 45-49, and Jim raced on Friday in the Men's Pro class.  Our Acme teammate, Greg, would arrive on Wednesday for his Men's Cat 1/2…

2016 Nationals-Mammoth CA

8,300 ft. Elevation at the start. I got up to Mammoth the day before the race and pre-rode the 5.3 mile course with team mate Cathy Chevron (4th place , Cat 1). I noticed right away that my legs felt weak on the climbs. I was careful to not go hard and save it for the race, hoping I could shake it off once I got going? The race start was 31 riders and I was in the back. I was concerned about starting off like an Acme shorty and running out of gas in the first lap. The climbs where not steep but… Continue

2016 Rockhopper Classic

With a couple of years of local racing behind me and having done well at the Shorty series it was brought to my attention that I needed to move up to a notch when signing up for future events. I ponied up for my CAT 1 (mtb) USA license and signed up for the Rockhopper Classic in expert 40+ mere days before the event. Also there would be Greg Alsterlind, Mark Buell, Dave Benjamin, Cathy Chevron, Jim Hewitt, Stephen Flynn, Bill Surges and Michael Koppe to make for a massive turnout for Team…

Rockhopper Classic '16

This was a late add to the race season- in part - due to the cecelation of the 2016 Tamarancho race. Acme bike team showed up in good numbers ( Jim, Kathy, Stephen, Michael, Dave, Bill, Mark I,Buell, me and Simon) and finished really well. Jenifer was missed but had a great excuse riding the day before in the 8hr. Wente race! I did not preride the course but Buell did and gave Mark I and I tips on some of the faster loose sections. I stayed with my normal set up (Top Fuel- Maxxis Icons) . I… Continue

Rockhopper 2016

I smiled early Sunday morning when I awoke to cool fog extending into Lucas Valley. In the past I have succumbed to the heat of Rockhopper. I never withdrew from the race but I suffered significant cramps during the steep climbs toward the end. As I drove toward Vacaville the fog gradually dissipated and I began to feel the heat of summer sunshine.

I looked for a parking spot in the shade and noticed the Trek tent and a large number of ACME riders. I am glad we supported the local…

Rockhopper classic

The Acme Bikes team showed up in full force on this cooler June 5 morning. It was good to meet up with most of the team, I recall 9 teammates and Simon in support. The race organizer gave us recognition after the race for a large Acme turnout. The race was slowed after the start due to two equestrians being chased down by the oncoming riders. The course was then free and clear and the pace picked up. Jim and Stephen were out in the lead and I settled in near the lead group. I haven't raced the… Continue

Boggs (Surrogate) 8 Hour Race - Solo

What a race! This year's Boggs race was not held at Bogg's Mountain as the area was decimated by fires last November, 2015, but instead was held at Camp Wente in Willits. I was skeptical about the new venue and course, but all doubts were quickly dismissed.

Camp Wente is a boy scout camp and has fun activities for non-racers and racers -a pristine lake, kayaking, archery, climbing wall, pump track and great camp sites w running water and showers. They even offer day camp for the…

2016 Amce Shorty

What I consider the best race in Marin. One year ago I was lucky enough to meet 4 of the best riders I now know at this Race. Some how I convinced each one to let me tag along on a ride with them through out the year. As a group we all moved up from the B class to ride in the A 35+ class. I was well aware that I was the weakest of the group and if I was going to hang in there I was going to have to work twice as hard. After the first two races things played out almost as expected with me… Continue

Nevada City Dirt Classic race #3

This the last of a 3 race series held by the Youth Bicyclist of Nevada County. The group has a different location for each race. Race 3 was on the Hallelujah trail, 95%. Fast Single track. I decided to take 2 1/2 hr. drive up the morning of rather than go the day before. Parking and checking in was made easy by a great staff and I was ready to preride the well marked 5.8 mile trail by 8:45. They had a very short (50 yard) climb at the start and then straight into down hill single track. I was… Continue
